Join us for a dance film and discussion about the embodiment of emotional availability and relationships during pregnancy. 

What began as a vision of creating a dance chronicle of a woman’s journey through pregnancy, evolved into a powerful collaboration across the CSU campus. Researchers Lia Closson, Zeynep Biringen, and Marjo Flykt developed an interactive workbook for in depth screening of emotional availability during pregnancy. This workbook provided reflective prompts used to drive dance choreography by Madeline Jazz Harvey, assistant professor of dance and new mom. The dance piece was created and filmed in stages over the course of nine months to music composed by talented CSU student, Eric Paricio. Director of photography, Brian Buss, worked meticulously to weave together a cohesive and tender timeline. The resultant dance film offers a sensorial instrument through which the psychological, emotional, and physical journey of pregnancy is explored.

The Embodiment event includes a screening of the film, live performance by CSU dance majors, a discussion of current research, and question and answer session with the collaborators.

Panelists

Zeynep Biringen, PhD obtained her master’s degree at Stanford University, PhD at the University of California at Berkeley, and MacArthur Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She completed her child clinical internship at the Montefiore Hospital of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City. Since 1996, she has been Professor of Human Development & Family Studies at Colorado State University, where she conducts research on emotional attachment and emotional availability (EA) and teaches courses relevant for early development and prevention/intervention science. As a child clinical psychologist and President of emotional availability.com, llc., she trains professionals in the use of the evidence-based Emotional Availability (EA) System.

Brian Bussgraduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Film and Media Studies and a minor in Photojournalism. His early career in television news helped establish him as an award-winning, freelance filmmaker where he worked regularly with network news outlets, and corporate clients. Today, Brian serves as the Assistant Director of Videography at CSU. He is currently producing a documentary in Uganda about a CSU student and custodian who raised $40,000 and built three schools.

Lia Closson, M.S. obtained her Prevention Science master’s degree in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at Colorado State University. She is currently a Maternal and Infant Mental Health Specialist, supporting families experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She also focuses on coaching all parents about emotional attachment, emotional availability, and mindfulness. She is an active member of the Larimer County Pregnancy Related Depression Coalition whose goal is to support women, families, and care providers in achieving healthy pregnancies and improved birth outcomes, for the immediate and long-term health, financial, and social benefits of all people in Larimer County communities. She is also the Colorado State Co-Coordinator for Postpartum Support International (PSI) providing social support, resources, and training for those who are involved in the professional, personal, or scientific aspects of perinatal emotional support.

Marjo Flykt, PhD, obtained her master’s degree in psychology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and doctoral degree and part of her postdoctoral training in University of Tampere, Finland, and is currently completing her post-doctoral training in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at Colorado State University. She is also a clinical psychologist and has an additional four-year training in parent-infant psychotherapy from Finland. Her research is related to parenting processes and interventions during the prenatal and postpartum period and their role in child development. As a clinician, she has worked in child psychiatric outpatient clinics for young children, in a communal family center aimed for pre- and postnatal psychotherapy, and as a private psychotherapist.

Madeline Jazz Harveyis a dance educator, choreographer, and performer specializing in classical and contemporary ballet. She began her performance career at age fourteen as an apprentice with Charlotte Ballet. In 2010, Madeline joined Carolina Ballet Theatre where she served as a principal dancer, resident choreographer, and outreach coordinator. She was Instructor of Ballet at the University of South Carolina from 2015-17 and is now Assistant Professor of Dance at Colorado State University. Madeline holds a BA and Professional Training Certificate in Dance from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and an MFA in Choreography from Jacksonville University. Her research investigates play as a paradigm for choreographic process and is centered on community engagement.
